Course Representatives

Each University course, including undergraduate and postgraduate courses, has Course Representatives - students who are elected by their fellow students at the start of each academic year. Course Representatives are expected to collect feedback from students on their course and present this to members of staff in the school at Student Staff Forum meetings throughout the academic year.

School Reps are appointed by Leeds University Union to represent the views and be the voice of students in your School, promoting student-led change. They play a fundamentally important role in ensuring your School and the University provide the best possible academic experience for students, and a better place to work and study.

Study Abroad

Have you ever dreamed of living and studying abroad? Want to get to know a different culture, meet new friends, and learn another language? If so, then our study abroad programmes are exactly what you are looking for!

The University of Leeds has links with many international universities from all over the world and the School of Physics and Astronomy offer exchange programmes with European universities in France, Germany, Denmark and Spain, and Universities further afield, in countries which include Canada, USA, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

You don’t have to decide firmly whether to go abroad or where until you start your second year of study with us. For a full list of destinations and more information visit the University of Leeds Study Abroad website.

School Representatives

Students on our BA International Development degree have the option to study abroad in the second semester of the second year. The modules you study at one of our partner universities will count towards your degree.

The semester abroad is offered independently of the University’s year-long study abroad programme, so you can still apply to extend your degree by a year and spend your third year overseas.

Year In Industry

Work experience can help you to explore your career options and gain a real-world insight into working life. During a work placement, you’ll develop professional skills with practical experience, increasing your future employability in the graduate job market.

In an increasingly competitive job market, a year in industry makes you stand out. It will help you to develop your skills and give you an insight into working life in a particular organisation or sector. All students have the opportunity to apply for a year in industry to develop employability skills and enhance future employment prospects.

Your year in industry will involve spending your third year on placement working in a graduate-level role. It will extend the length of your degree by a year, and once successfully completed, will also be recognised in your degree title, for example, BA (Hons) Zoology (Industry).

The placements should be paid full-time posts lasting between 9 and 12 months in length. Students can take up an unpaid placement if the post does offer the sort of employment opportunities you are looking for. However, we do prefer the placements to be paid ones.

Placements ideally should be in a post related to your degree and direction of studies. The placements can be in any location. The vast majority are within the UK. However, some students do take up posts overseas.

Full support and guidance is offered both in finding a placement and during your placement year. Whilst most students complete one placement in a year, it is possible to undertake more than one during the placement year.

FOBSOC

You can join the student-run Faculty of Biological Sciences Society, which brings together students from all years within the Faculty.

They run a wide range of social and academic events throughout the year both on their own and in collaboration with other societies. The aim is to help each other with problems, meet new people and have fun through social events and sporting activities. Social events include Otley Runs, pub quizzes, visiting Leeds Christmas market and the big headline events such as the lab coat social, the festive Snowcial and FoBSoc ball.

FoBSoc currently have two sports team (football and netball) and a ‘couch to 5k’ initiative. Hockey. You can find out more about the society on Facebook and Twitter.
